This tour shows you
the highlights along the Mediterranean Coast, the capitol
Tripoli, the Roman Sites of Leptis Magna and Sabratha and
the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ghadames, the pearl of the
desert. You will also get an impression of the world’s
largest desert on an excursion into the Sahara. Local
transport is by air conditioned minibus and 4x4 and
accommodation is in the 4 star Al Kabir in the centre of
Tripoli and the 2 star Fundouq in Ghadames, the best hotel
in town. One night camping in the open desert (optional). |
Itinerary
Tripoli & The Sahara
Day 1 |
Scheduled flight to Tripoli and transfer to the hotel Al
Kabir in the centre of town. In the afternoon join our
walking tour of the centre of Tripoli – familiarise yourself
with this fascinating city with its long and changing
history. Dinner in a local restaurant and overnight in the
hotel. |
| Day 2 |
After breakfast in the hotel visit the National Museum on
the Green Square, it houses the largest collection of Roman
mosaics in the world and gives an interesting insight into
Tripolitania’s colourful past. After a light lunch we head
for Leptis Magna - one of the most spectacular Roman sites
along the Mediterranean coast. Dinner is in a local
restaurant and overnight at the hotel Al Kabir in Tripoli. |
| Day 3 |
In the morning we are off to Ghadames via Nalut. The old
town of Nalut with its Berber granary clings to the edge of
a steep hillside and offers superb views over the
surrounding mountains and plains. After lunch en route we
continue on to Ghadames where we have our overnight stop.
Dinner at a local restaurant, overnight at the hotel
Fundouq. |
Day 4 |
Explore the old town of Ghadames – a UNESCO World Heritage
Site of outstanding quality, arguably the finest surviving
old town anywhere in the Sahara. See how people used to live
in this ancient town on the crossroads of caravans and let
your guide explain about the traditions and customs of the
locals. Have a traditional lunch in one of the houses with a
local family before you head into the Sahara by 4x4 for a
true desert experience. Get enticed by the worlds largest
desert - watch a fabulous sunset and have dinner in the
sanddunes – prepared for you in traditional style on the
open fire. If you like, you can stay in the Sahara for a
nights camping or get a 4x4 transfer back to the hotel in
Ghadames for your overnight stop. |
Day 5 |
You are heading back towards Tripoli via Sabratha – a Roman
site with a wonderfully preserved Roman City. Lunch en route
and dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight at the hotel Al
Kabir in Tripoli. |
Day 6 |
Join your guide for a walking tour of the medina and let him
explain about the different crafts and trades, all located
in their individual quarters. Get enticed by the truly
oriental charm of this ancient market place. Do your
shopping for souvenirs here – quality items can be found at
incredible prices. Take a sandwich or a kebab for lunch
before having the option to visit the former British and
French Consulates, buildings from the 18th and 19th century
that have been restored to their former glory and offer a
haven of tranquillity in this bustling city. After dinner
take a walk along the seafront before retiring to your
comfortable room in the hotel Al Kabir. |
Day 7 |
Take it easy in the morning or go back to the markets to
look for another bargain to take home with you before being
transferred to the airport south of Tripoli for your flight
home. |
