Taking Your Own 4x4

If you have not travelled the Sahara or Northern Africa before, we recommend to start off with our Sahara I - The Great Eastern Erg itinerary to develop a feeling for the Sahara and to find out whether this environment is for you or not.

There is no need to upgrade your vehicle to expedition spec, you need a good set of tires in a larger than standard dimension, take off sidesteps, mud flaps and Dixon-Bate style tow bars and give the vehicle a good service prior to departure. You will also need a place to sleep on the Sahara leg - personal preference matters. Roof tents can be hired or purchased from Trek Overland, Footloose and 4x4 Touring Gear (see links) but even a simple ground tent will be sufficient.

When you book with Saharatravel, we supply you with a comprehensive infopack with checklists for your vehicle and personal equipment, route descriptions and a much more.

We are not into rallying or racing and you will not do any damage to your vehicle - provided you are familiar with its abilities and limits.

The ferry to Tunis departs from Marseille (600 mls from Calais) and you make your way across France at your own pace - your ticket for the channel crossing is an open return and you can change dates and times around as you please.
