This 14 day safari
gets you right into the heart of the most spectacular
landscape of the Sahara in Southern Algeria. Tassili
n'Ajjer or the "plateau of rivers" stretches from
south-eastern Algeria right into Libya and must be one
of the most impressive corners on the globe. The rivers
have disappeared thousands of years ago and what remains
are magnificent gorges and valleys, bizarre scenery like
out of another world set on a carpet of red and golden
sand. After spending a good few days in and around Djanet, exploring the ancient rock paintings and engravings in the Tadrat gorge and at T-in Tanzarift, of which the most stunning can only be accessed on foot or by donkey, you will make your way by 4x4 across open desert towards Tamanrasset, about 350 miles of sanddunes and track. Soon, the volcanic rocks of the Hoggar mountain range will appear and via the little settlements of Ideles and Hirhafouk you will be ascending towards Assekrem with father Foucauld's Hermitage, still inhabited by a couple of monks who are celebrating mass every morning high up on 7500 feet. Close by are the highest elevations of the Sahara, Tahat and Ilamane with almost 9000 feet a truly alpine environment. After a round trip in the Hoggar during which you will visit some genuine Touareg families and experience their hospitality, you will finally arrive in Tamanrasset, where a lively town awaits the discerning traveller. After a couple of days, your flight back home leaves right from Tam via Algiers and Paris. |
